Event Abstract:
Looking to use or make maps as part of your research or analyses? The University of Maryland, Baltimore County's Geography & Environmental Sciences (GES) department has revamped its GIS Master's degree and certificate program to address the growing influence of geographic information on society and the environment.
This shift acknowledges the ease of creating and using spatial data with far-reaching impacts from the widespread availability and embeddedness of geographic technologies in everyday life that require more critical thought and social scientific methods to meet today’s challenges in the pursuit of improved social and environmental well-being.
To cover this redesign and what it means for prospective students, students at the university, and faculty who use spatial technologies, Dr. Dillon Mahmoudi and Prof. Ron Wilson will present the new program, covering two general themes in their presentation. The first theme illustrates how Critical Cartography and GIS has become the driving force for the new program. The second theme distinguishes our program from others by instilling a social science foundation into the program. The combination of these two themes manifests a unique program that cultivates students who are technically proficient, yet are well-versed in social science thinking and methods.
This talk will be followed by networking and refreshments.
